Dhanush Sues Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan Over Unauthorized Naanum Rowdy Dhaan Footage in Netflix Docu

Actor-producer Dhanush has filed a civil lawsuit against superstar actress Nayanthara and her spouse, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, over the unauthorized use of a film scene from his 2015 production Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in Nayanthara’s recent Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale

The claim, filed by Dhanush’s company Wunderbar Movies Private Limited within the Madras High Court, names Nayanthara, Shivan, and their company Rowdy Pictures Private Limited as litigants. The court has allowed consent to incorporate Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, a Mumbai-based company dealing with Netflix’s content investments in India, within the claim.

The debate emerged when Nayanthara used a behind-the-scenes film from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her narrative without consent from Dhanush. Dhanush’s company has requested ₹10 crore for the unauthorized use of the footage. Nayanthara reacted with an open letter on Instagram, blaming Dhanush for influencing her to not use the film and claiming that he harboured individual resentment against her and Shivan.

The court has asked Nayanthara to reply to the suit by the following hearing. The continuous debate has supposedly caused pressure between the two performing artists, who were seen maintaining a strategic distance from each other at a later wedding in Chennai.

Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale
which investigates Nayanthara’s life past the fabulousness, debuted on Netflix on December 18, 2024. The narrative comes back from a few huge names within the film industry, including Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, and Smash Charan, who issued No Protest Certificates (NOCs) for utilizing their film.

As the legitimate fight unfurls, the entertainment industry observes closely, foreseeing the result of this high-profile case.
