⚠️ What happened

According to user reports and media posts, around 10–15 minutes ago, residents in Kolkata and surrounding areas felt strong tremors. Social media videos are circulating, showing noticeable shaking and startled residents.

One seismic-monitoring website lists a quake near Bangladesh: “Powerful mag. 6.0 Earthquake – 28 km northeast of Dhaka, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh, on Friday, Nov 21, 2025, at 10:38 am (GMT +6).”
If accurate, that would line up roughly with the reports from Kolkata, given the time zones.

Key points:

  • Epicentre: approx 28 km NE of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • Magnitude: around 6.0 (pending official confirmation)
  • Time: ~10:38 am (GMT+6) → approx 10:08 am IST (GMT+5:30)
  • Tremors strong enough to be felt in Kolkata & neighbouring districts.

🌍 Impact so far

Earthquake

Kolkata & West Bengal region

  • Many residents in Kolkata report feeling the shaking: furniture rattling, lights swaying, brief but strong waves of motion.
  • No verified reports yet of structural damage, casualties or major disruptions.
  • Given the epicentre is across the border and possibly deep, any damage is expected to be limited — though caution remains.

Bangladesh

  • With the epicentre near Dhaka, Bangladesh, local shaking may be stronger than in Kolkata. But we found no verified reports yet in mainstream media of casualties or damage in Dhaka or surrounding districts (at least as per early data).
  • Authorities in Bangladesh will likely issue updates imminently.

🔍 Why did Kolkata feel it strongly?

A few reasons:

  • The region lies in a seismic-sensitive zone: the tectonic setting around the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh and Northeastern India is active.
  • Even though the epicentre is in Bangladesh, seismic waves propagate widely — major quakes can be felt far away.
  • If the quake was shallow or medium depth, the shaking could be relatively strong locally.
  • Urban structures in Kolkata often amplify shaking (older buildings, high-rise sway, unreinforced masonry), so even if the magnitude is moderate, the felt intensity may appear higher.

📡 What are the risks / what to watch out for

  • After-shocks: A main shock of ~6.0 magnitude often triggers multiple after-shocks. Some may be strong enough to be felt. Stay alert.
  • Structural safety: Older buildings, heritage structures in Kolkata, might face cracking or small damage. People should inspect their homes (especially balconies, ceilings, and non-load-bearing walls).
  • Utilities/infrastructure: Power lines, water supply, subway/underground tunnels may have been stressed. Keep an eye on any disruptions.
  • Border / Bangladesh impact: The most serious damage, if any, may be in Bangladesh near the epicentre. Watch for official updates from Bangladeshi disaster/seismology authorities.
  • Tsunami / sea-quake risk: Not likely given inland epicentre, but if the quake were offshore and shallow, there would be a watch. For now, no tsunami alert has been issued (based on available info).

📝 What we don’t yet know

  • The official magnitude, depth and exact co-ordinates (seismological agencies have not yet published full details for this “just now” event).
  • The full extent of damage or human impact (both in Bangladesh and in West Bengal) — likely still being assessed.
  • Whether the tremor has triggered any secondary hazards (landslides, liquefaction, building collapse).
  • The duration and intensity of after-shocks that may follow.

✅ What you should do now

  • If you are in Kolkata or nearby:
    • Check your building for any cracks or structural damage (especially if you felt strong shaking).
    • Stay away from walls with visible damage or leaning structures until they are inspected.
    • Keep phones and lights charged — aftershocks can cause further disruptions.
    • If indoors when shaking happened: move to safe spots (under a sturdy table, doorway) until you’re sure it’s safe.
  • Monitor trusted sources for updates: local disaster management, seismological centre announcements.
  • In Bangladesh and border areas, local authorities may advise on evacuations, damage inspections — heed those directives.
