📰 Business & Automotive News | EV Sector Update

In a historic milestone for India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution, Tesla Inc. has officially opened its first showroom in India, located at Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. The 4,000-square-foot Tesla Experience Centre marks the long-anticipated entry of the American EV giant into the world’s third-largest automobile market.

The showroom was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who called Tesla’s debut in India a “statement of innovation and sustainability.”

“It is not just a car company—it’s a symbol of design, innovation, and sustainability. Maharashtra is proud to be its gateway to India,” CM Fadnavis stated during the launch ceremony.

🚗 Model Y Unveiled: The Star of the Showroom

It’s Mumbai Experience Centre currently showcases the Model Y SUV, which has been imported from the Shanghai Gigafactory. Six fully assembled units have been brought in for display and test drives, creating a buzz among auto enthusiasts and early adopters.

Highlights of the Model Y:

  • Sleek coupe-inspired design in dark grey
  • Black alloy wheels
  • Dual-tone black and white interior
  • 15.4-inch central touchscreen
  • Wireless charging and USB-C ports
  • App-based access and voice command capabilities

  • Long Range RWD
  • Long Range AWD

Both promise a range of up to 500 km per charge and a top speed of 201 km/h.

💰 Tesla Model Y India Pricing & Import Tariff Challenge

The starting price of the Model Y in India is ₹59.89 lakh, while the Long Range AWD variant is priced at ₹67.89 lakh. These prices are influenced heavily by India’s 70% to 100% import duties on completely built units (CBUs)—a challenge its CEO, Elon Musk, has openly criticised in the past.

Although It has not yet confirmed plans for local manufacturing, India’s new EV policy offers incentives and reduced duties for companies that commit to manufacturing within the country in the future.

🛠️ Support Infrastructure & National Expansion

Tesla is laying the groundwork for a long-term presence in India with a strong local footprint:

  • 24,565 sq. ft. warehouse in Kurla for servicing operations
  • Co-working office at Phoenix Market City, Kurla, for regional management
  • The second showroom in Aerocity, New Delhi already been finalised
  • Future expansion into other major metros, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai

Notably, all its facilities in Mumbai are within a 10-km radius, a move that enhances operational efficiency and customer convenience.

🌏 India: Tesla’s Strategic Growth Market

It’s foray into India comes at a pivotal moment. With slowing demand in North America and Europe, the company is looking at emerging economies like India to drive its next phase of growth.

India’s EV adoption curve is rising, aided by government support, consumer awareness, and rising fuel costs. Tesla’s debut is expected to boost market confidence and accelerate EV adoption across the premium vehicle segment.

🔑 What’s Next for Tesla India?

While the debut is a promising start, key challenges remain, including:

  • High import tariffs
  • Absence of Tesla’s full self-driving software in India
  • Building a comprehensive EV charging ecosystem
  • Gaining market share in a price-sensitive environment

Still, with its first physical footprint now established, Tesla’s entry signals a transformative shift in the Indian auto landscape.
