Bollywood and Assam Mourn the Sudden Death of Iconic Singer Zubeen Garg at 52 in Singapore

The world of Indian music and cinema is in shock after celebrated Bollywood and Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died at the age of 52 in Singapore. Garg, renowned for his eclectic musical styles and deep connection with fans across India, passed away in a tragic scuba diving accident while in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival.

Tragedy Strikes in Singapore

On September 19, during a leisure scuba diving session in Singapore, Zubeen Garg experienced sudden breathing difficulties underwater. Festival organisers reported that Garg was swiftly rescued and given CPR, but despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived. He was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital at approximately 2:30 pm IST.

Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to headline performances at the North East India Festival slated for September 20 and 21. In his last Instagram post, published on September 16, the energetic singer invited his global fans to join him at the festival, promising an evening filled with music and celebration of Northeast India’s vibrant culture.

A Multifaceted Icon

Zubeen Garg was more than just a singer—he was a composer, actor, filmmaker, and cultural ambassador. Famous nationwide for soulful hits like “Ya Ali” from Gangster and “Dil Tu Hi Bataa” from Krrish 3, Garg’s contributions spanned Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi cinema. His direction and acting in films such as KanchanjungaMission China, and Mon Jai reinforced his role as a trailblazer for the Northeast’s artistic community.

His career was not without turbulence—in 2022, he had suffered a minor head injury but made a full recovery, returning to the stage with renewed energy and commitment to his art.

Outpouring of Grief in Assam and Beyond

News of Zubeen Garg’s sudden demise sent shockwaves through Assam and India. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound grief, calling Zubeen Garg “one of Assam’s favourite sons… gone too early.” Sarma wrote, “Zubeen’s voice had an unmatched ability to energise people, and his music spoke directly to our minds and souls. He has left a void that will never be filled.” The Chief Minister praised Garg’s legacy as an inspiration to future generations and noted his passion for connecting with people beyond music.

Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal also mourned, stating, “Assam has lost not just a voice, but a heartbeat… Zubeen da was more than a singer; he was the pride of Assam and the nation, whose songs carried our culture, our emotions, our spirit to every corner of the world.”

Former MP Ripun Bora described Garg as “our cultural icon,” expressing condolences to his family, fans, and friends for a loss that has resonated beyond state borders.

Cultural Legacy

Zubeen Garg’s imprint on Indian music and film will endure for generations. His ability to bridge tradition and modernity, and connect diverse communities through song and cinema, remains unparalleled. He is survived by his wife, fashion designer Garima Saikia Garg.
