Hansal Mehta, the acclaimed director behind the hit series “Scam 1992,” is back with another riveting instalment in the Scam franchise. This time, he delves into the life of Subrata Roy, the enigmatic founder of the Sahara India Pariwar. The newly announced series, titled “Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga,” has already stirred controversy and discontent within the Sahara Group.
The Teaser and Backstory of Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga
Hansal Mehta took to Twitter to reveal a teaser video for “Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga.” In the short clip, glimpses of Subrata Roy’s rise from humble beginnings to becoming a business tycoon are showcased. The rags-to-riches tale promises intrigue, drama, and a deeper exploration of the man behind the empire.
Subrata Roy, a self-made entrepreneur, started his business journey with a modest capital of Rs 2,000 in 1978 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Over the years, he built the Sahara empire through various chit-fund schemes, collecting millions of rupees from people living below the poverty line. His lack of transparency and exploitation of vulnerable investors eventually caught the attention of the market regulator Security and Exchange Bureau of India (SEBI).
The Legal Battle and Imprisonment
In 2010, SEBI made a case against Subrata Roy, revealing that he had collected over Rs 24,000 crore from three crore individuals. The allegations led to his arrest on charges of investor fraud. He was jailed in 2014 for failing to pay an outstanding amount of Rs 10,000 crore. Despite his incarceration, Roy continued to wield influence, boasting connections in the business, political, and entertainment worlds.
During his time in prison, Subrata Roy faced legal battles and controversies. He was released on parole in 2016 but was later jailed again when SEBI requested the Supreme Court to cancel his parole. His larger-than-life persona and the scale of his financial operations made him a prominent figure in India’s corporate landscape.
The Sahara Group’s Discontent
The announcement of “Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga” has not been well-received by the Sahara Group. In a scathing statement, the conglomerate condemned Hansal Mehta’s portrayal of Subrata Roy. They labelled the show as “abusive” and threatened legal action against the makers. The group believes that the series misrepresents their founder and tarnishes his legacy.
The Legacy and Controversy
Subrata Roy’s legacy remains a complex tapestry of success, controversy, and legal battles. His business acumen, charisma, and ability to amass wealth were undeniable, but so were the allegations of financial irregularities. As the Scam franchise dives into his story, viewers can expect a gripping narrative that sheds light on the man behind the headlines.
“Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga” is the third season of the Scam franchise, produced by Applause Entertainment. Following the success of “Scam 1992” and “Scam 2003,” this latest instalment promises to be another captivating exploration of India’s financial landscape and the individuals who shaped it.
Whether the series will vindicate or further scrutinize Subrata Roy’s actions remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the saga of the Sahara tycoon will continue to captivate audiences and spark debates about ethics, power, and the price of ambition.
