While many calendars customarily mark Diwali 2025 across five days, astrologers this year emphasise that the festival’s auspicious span extends through six days, beginning with Dhanteras and culminating in Bhai Dooj.

• Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali (Day 2) — 19 October
• Lakshmi Puja / Diwali (Main Day) (Day 3) — 20 October (evening)

Thus, the festival season opens with Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Trayodashi, and the culminating Amavasya night becomes the heart of ritual celebration.

📿 Why 20 October Is the Chosen Night for Lakshmi Puja

According to the Hindu almanac, the Amavasya Tithi (new moon phase) begins on 20 October at 3:44 PM and continues until 5:54 PM on 21 October.

Astro-experts highlight that Pradosh Kaal (the evening period after sunset), which runs roughly from 5:58 PM to 8:25 PM, overlaps with Vrishabha Kaal (7:08 PM to 9:03 PM), forming the window 7:08 PM to 8:18 PM as the prime Lakshmi Puja Muhurat.

In this confluence, several favourable yogas (planetary combinations) come into play — including Brahma Yoga and Trigrahīy Sanjog — making the invocation of Lakshmi especially potent, according to Āchārya.

Devotees are thus advised: on 20 October evening, during Pradosh Kaal, light the lamps, chant the mantras, and invite the Goddess into homes and hearts.

• Clean & Purify: Before evening, homes should be swept and washed.
• Lakshmi–Ganesha Murti: It is considered ideal to use new or ceremonially purified idols of the deities.
• Light Up: Diyas (oil lamps) must be lit in every corner, indoor and outdoor, symbolising the dispelling of darkness.
• Mantras & Aarti: Recite the Lakshmi and Ganesh stotras, perform aarti, and offer naivedya (sweets, rice, flowers).
• Vigil Through Night (Jagaran): Many stay awake through the night, keeping lamps lit, in devotion and to welcome the Goddess.

Those who observe the Yama Deepa (lighting the southern lamp on the night before Diwali) and perform deep-daan with sincerity are believed to attract Lakshmi’s grace and blessings.
