The Perfect Storm: Pakistan 2026 Polycrisis and the Threat to Regional Security

As of March 2026, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan finds itself engulfed in an unprecedented and multidimensional polycrisis, representing perhaps the most perilous political doldrum in its modern history. The state apparatus is witnessing its hardest time managing essential functions, paralysed by an insolvent macroeconomic framework, the erosion of civilian political authority, and simultaneous, multi-front military conflicts.

This is not a mere cyclical downturn but a structural collapse of the foundational pillars upon which the state has historically relied. The country is submerged under the weight of crushing international loans, reducing its economic sovereignty to a state of perpetual dependency. Concurrently, the Pakistan Armed Forces, historically the ultimate arbiter of power, have suffered a catastrophic loss of institutional credibility. Both domestically and internationally, the military is increasingly perceived as a rented mercenary force, willing to align with foreign strategic interests at the expense of its own citizens to secure financial lifelines.

A Nation Saturated With Militancy

The internal security environment has deteriorated to a state of near-anarchy. The entirety of Pakistan is currently saturated with Islamic terrorist outfits moving around openly and operating with impunity. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TDP) is creating a massive nuisance that has escalated far beyond the control of the Pakistani army. In a shocking display of military overstretch, numerous Pakistani border posts and vast territorial areas have been captured by Taliban and allied militant forces without much resistance. Furthermore, Afghanistan has adopted a highly proactive and aggressive military posture, engaging in an intense war with Pakistan along the disputed Durand Line.

Pakistan 2026 Polycrisis: The Iran-Israel War and Saudi Defence Pact

These internal pressures have been severely exacerbated by the complexities that arose last month with the outbreak of the devastating Iran-Israel war. The conflict has placed severe demands on Pakistan to allow its sovereign airspace and territory to be used to launch attacks against Iran. In response, Tehran has explicitly stated that devastating revenge will be taken against any complicit nation.

Compounding this dilemma is Pakistan’s recent defence tie-up with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, an alliance that has proven to be too heavy a price for Islamabad to bear. As the Iran-Israel conflict spills over, any retaliatory attack on Saudi Arabian infrastructure places immense pressure on the Pakistani army to get directly involved, threatening to drag the nation into a catastrophic regional war.

Internal Disintegration and Desperate Rhetoric

Internally, the state is rapidly fracturing along ethnic and regional lines. Unprecedented protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have seen the populace openly chanting slogans against commanding generals and the Prime Minister. These protests have rapidly spread, intensifying and simultaneously increasing the momentum of the ethno-nationalist struggles of the Baloch, Afghani, and Sindhi populations.

These centrifugal forces have multiplied the state’s problems to the extent that the Prime Minister, standing in the National Assembly, was forced into a desperate rhetorical corner. In an attempt to manufacture artificial social cohesion, the Prime Minister declared that the nation must be cautious of the Indian establishment and that the populace needs to join together to fight enemies. This rhetoric is not an anomaly but a reflection of the state’s foundational ethos. It serves as a stark reminder that Pakistan was founded on the very core of hatred against Sanatan Sanskriti, one of the oldest and greatest continuous civilisations in human history, which gave the world invaluable contributions in philosophy, mathematics, and pluralistic coexistence.
