Ram Temple Project a Fitting Reply in West Bengal Amidst TMC’s Mosque Plans

In a significant development after Humayun Kabir’s announcement regarding building a Babri-like mosque, the West Bengal BJP’s Murshidabad unit has announced plans to build a grand Ram temple in Berhampore. This announcement comes just days after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) revealed its intention to build a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid in the same district. This move has sparked a political controversy, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the two major political parties in the state.

The BJP’s Berhampore organizational district president, Shakharav Sarkar, confirmed that the land for the Ram temple has already been identified, and the construction is set to begin on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The project, estimated to cost Rs 10 crore, aims to replicate the design of the Ayodhya temple, symbolizing the party’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage.

TMC’s Babri Masjid-Like Mosque

On the other hand, TMC MLA Humayun Kabir announced plans to construct a mosque in Beldanga, modelled after the Babri Masjid, to honour the sentiments of the region’s significant majority population * Muslim Po[ulation which is now majority in the said district). Kabir emphasized that the mosque would serve as a tribute to the historical Babri Masjid, which was demolished in Ayodhya in 1992. This announcement has been met with criticism from opposition parties, who accuse Kabir of attempting to polarize communities for political gain.

Political Reactions

The BJP’s counterproposal to build a Ram temple is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence among the minority community in Murshidabad, a district where Muslims account for around 75 percent of the population. The TMC, however, has distanced itself from Kabir’s statements, describing them as his initiative. Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also criticized Kabir’s announcement, calling it “irresponsible” and “divisive”.

Conclusion

As the political landscape in West Bengal continues to evolve, the announcements of the Ram temple and Babri Masjid-like mosque projects underscore the deep-seated cultural and religious dynamics at play. Both projects are set to begin in 2025, marking a significant year for the region. The developments will undoubtedly shape the political discourse in the state, as parties vie for influence and support among their respective constituencies.
