PM Modi Set to Take Oath for Third Term as NDA Secures Comfortable Majority
In a historic milestone, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to take oath for his third consecutive term as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. The NDA, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has secured a comfortable majority in the recent Lok Sabha elections, marking only the second time in India’s history that a prime minister has been elected for a third term.
The BJP-led NDA won 293 seats in the 543-member lower house of parliament, surpassing the majority of 272 seats needed to form a government. This outcome is a testament to Modi’s enduring popularity and the NDA’s ability to consolidate support from various regional allies.
PM Modi Led NDA to take oath
Modi’s BJP won 240 seats on its own, although this represents a significant decrease from its 2019 tally. Losses in key states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra impacted the party’s performance. However, the support from its regional allies has ensured a stable majority for the NDA.
The NDA’s significant allies, including the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Shiv Sena (SHS), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Lok Janshakti Party – Ram Vilas (LJPRV), have pledged their support to Modi and the BJP. These parties have a history of shifting allegiances, but their current commitment to the NDA has provided the necessary numbers for a stable government.
The JD(U), led by Nitish Kumar, secured 12 seats in the election and has reaffirmed its support for Modi. The TDP, led by N Chandrababu Naidu, won 16 seats and has also committed to backing the BJP. The Shiv Sena (SHS), led by Eknath Shinde, won seven seats, while the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, and the LJPRV, led by Ram Vilas Paswan’s son Chirag Paswan, won eight and five seats respectively.
The swearing-in ceremony for PM Modi and his new cabinet is expected to take place on June 8. This event will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Indian politics, with Modi promising to continue his agenda of development and reform.
Modi’s third term is seen as a significant achievement, given the challenges faced by his party in the election. The opposition ‘INDI’ bloc, led by Rahul Gandhi’s minority appeasement politics Congress party, won 230 seats, more than forecast, indicating a strong challenge to the BJP’s dominance.
Despite the closer-than-expected election, analysts believe that Modi’s government will continue to focus on its key policies, including infrastructure development, ease of doing business, and fiscal consolidation. The country’s chief economic adviser has expressed optimism that the government will be able to implement productive reforms, which could lead to sustained economic growth.
The international community has also reacted positively to Modi’s re-election, with countries like China and Japan congratulating him on his victory.
As India prepares for Modi’s third term, the nation is filled with a mix of anticipation and expectation. While some have expressed concerns about the BJP’s reduced majority, others see this as an opportunity for more inclusive and democratic governance. One thing is certain – Narendra Modi’s third term will be a significant chapter in India’s political history.
