Income tax audit report due date

In a major relief for businesses and tax practitioners across India, the Income Tax Department has announced an extension of the deadline for submission of tax audit reports for the financial year 2024-25. Taxpayers now have until October 31, 2025, to file their audit reports—one month beyond the original September 30 deadline. This move aims to accommodate the challenges faced by professionals and businesses due to recent disruptions and technical bottlenecks.

Why Was the Income Tax Audit Report Due Date Extended?

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) decided after receiving numerous representations from professional associations, including chartered accountant bodies. These groups cited significant challenges—in particular, the impact of floods and other natural calamities in parts of the country, which hampered routine business activities and delayed the completion of audit procedures. Some of these concerns were also presented before various High Courts.

Key Highlights of Income Tax Audit Report Due Date Extension

  • New Deadline: Tax audit reports for FY 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) can now be submitted up to October 31, 2025.
  • Smooth Portal Operations: The CBDT clarified that the Income Tax e-filing portal is operating efficiently, with no technical glitches impeding the uploading of audit reports.
  • Record Filing Numbers: Over 7.57 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed by September 23, 2025. As of September 24, about 4.02 lakh audit reports had been uploaded, including over 60,000 in a single day.
  • Relief for Tax Practitioners: The extension is specifically in response to disruptions from floods and other natural disasters, along with feedback about time constraints from professional groups.
