India Overtakes Japan to Become World’s Fourth Largest Economy: NITI Aayog CEO

New Delhi: India has achieved a monumental milestone on the global economic stage. According to NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, the country has officially surpassed Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, boasting a nominal GDP of $4 trillion. The announcement was made during the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, signalling a new era in India’s economic ascent.

📈 India’s Meteoric Rise in the Global Economy

Citing International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, Subrahmanyam stated:

“We are the fourth-largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy.”

India now stands behind only the United States, China, and Germany in terms of economic size. This achievement comes on the back of robust domestic demand, rapid industrialization, and a booming services sector. The IMF predicts India will retain its title as the fastest-growing major economy, with projected GDP growth rates of 6.2% in 2025 and 6.3% in 2026.

🥉 Path to Becoming the World’s Third-Largest Economy

Subrahmanyam expressed confidence in India’s continued upward trajectory, suggesting that the country could surpass Germany within the next 2.5 to 3 years, provided it maintains its current economic momentum.

“If we stick to what is being planned and thought through, we will be the third-largest economy soon,” he asserted.

Subrahmanyam also addressed recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who criticised Apple for not shifting iPhone manufacturing to America. Acknowledging the complexities of global tariffs and trade policies, Subrahmanyam reaffirmed India’s cost-effectiveness and long-term potential as a global manufacturing hub.

“Given the dynamics, we will be a cheap place to manufacture,” he said.

🏗️ Economic Reforms on the Horizon

Looking ahead, India is preparing for a second round of asset monetisation, set to be announced in August 2025. This initiative aims to unlock the value of public infrastructure assets, attract investment, and improve economic efficiency across key sectors.
