PM Modi Receives Russia’s Highest Civilian Award from Putin: Strengthening Indo-Russian Ties
Moscow, July 9, 2024 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia has garnered significant attention, especially as it marks his first trip to the country since Moscow’s conflict with Ukraine in February 2022. The two-day visit, which took place on July 8 and 9, was characterized by diplomatic discussions, strategic reaffirmations, and a momentous honour bestowed upon Modi.
The Grand Welcome
Upon his arrival in Moscow, Modi was greeted with warmth and respect. Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted a private dinner for the Indian Prime Minister, setting the stage for substantive talks. The leaders met at the Grand Kremlin Palace, where they discussed a wide range of bilateral and global issues.
Reiterating Strategic Partnership Modi and Putin
During their meeting, Modi reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to its strategic partnership with Russia. Despite the complexities arising from Russia’s actions in Ukraine, India has maintained strong ties with its Cold War ally. Vladimir Putin’s decision to honour Modi with the Order of St Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, Russia’s highest civilian award, underscores the enduring friendship between the two nations.
The Significance of the Award
The Order of St Andrew holds historical significance. Established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, it pays homage to Saint Andrew, the first apostle of Jesus and the patron saint of Russia. Modi’s recognition as the first Indian leader to receive this prestigious award symbolizes the deep-rooted trust and cooperation between India and Russia.
Modi’s Gratitude
In a special ceremony held at St Andrew Hall in the Kremlin, Putin presented the award to Modi. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Modi emphasized that the honour belonged not only to him but also to India’s 1.4 billion citizens. He stated, “This is the honour of the centuries-old deep friendship and mutual trust between India and Russia. This is the honour of our special and privileged strategic partnership” .
Fostering Bilateral Ties- Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi
Modi’s leadership has played a pivotal role in strengthening India-Russia relations across various domains. From defence cooperation to energy partnerships, the collaborative efforts between the two countries have flourished. India now receives over 40% of its oil imports from Russia, highlighting the importance of this bilateral relationship. Despite geopolitical shifts, Modi has skillfully navigated the delicate balance between Russia and India’s other major partner, China.
Looking Ahead Putin and Modi
As Modi and Putin engaged in discussions at the Kremlin, they explored avenues for further cooperation. Their commitment to peace, stability, and shared interests resonated during their talks. The award ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between India and Russia, transcending political challenges and reaffirming their strategic trust.
