In a strategic move that could reshape the ride-hailing industry, Ola Cabs has announced its decision to fully exit Google Maps and embrace its proprietary navigation platform, Ola Maps. The company’s founder and CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, shared this groundbreaking development on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the benefits and cost savings associated with this transition.
Why Ola Cabs Shift to Ola Map?
- Vertical Integration: Ola Cabs’s move away from Google Maps aligns with its vision of vertical integration. By controlling its mapping technology, Ola aims to reduce dependency on external services and enhance the overall user experience.
- Cost Savings: Bhavish Aggarwal revealed that Ola Cabs used to spend ₹100 crore annually on mapping services. However, by leveraging Ola Maps, the company has effectively reduced this expense to zero. This substantial cost-saving measure underscores Ola’s commitment to efficiency and innovation.
- Features and Enhancements: Ola Maps is set to receive several exciting features in the coming months:
- Street View: Users can explore locations from the street level.
- NERFs (Navigation-Enhanced Reality Features): Augmented reality overlays for improved navigation.
- Indoor Images: Detailed indoor maps for malls, airports, and other large spaces.
- 3D Maps: Enhanced visual representation of terrain and buildings.
- Drone Maps: Aerial views for better route planning.
What Is Ola’s Krutrim AI and Krutrim Cloud?
- Krutrim AI: Ola Cabs’s artificial intelligence company, Krutrim, has rapidly grown into a startup unicorn. Established in December last year, it offers cutting-edge solutions across various domains.
- Krutrim Cloud: Launched in May 2024, Krutrim Cloud provides cloud services to developers. Already, 2,500 developers have signed up to leverage its capabilities.
Previous Moves by Ola
- Azure Exit: Before parting ways with Google Maps, Ola Cabs had already exited Microsoft’s cloud service, Azure. The shift to Krutrim Cloud followed a disagreement with Microsoft-owned LinkedIn over the usage of pronouns in a post by Bhavish Aggarwal.
- Solid-State Batteries: Ola is also investing in research on solid-state batteries for its electric scooters, aiming to incorporate them by next year.
In summary, Ola Cabs’s adoption of Ola Maps represents a bold step toward self-reliance and innovation. As the company continues to evolve, users can expect an enhanced mapping experience and cost-effective solutions.
