Hathras Stampede: Tragedy Strikes Public Gathering, Claiming 116 Lives

On July 2, 2024, a devastating stampede occurred during a public event near Phulrai village in the Sikandrarau area of Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district.

Here are the key details of Hathras Tragedy:

  1. The Event:
    • The gathering was organized by preacher Baba Narayan Hari, popularly known as Bhole Baba.
    • Thousands of devotees had congregated for a ‘Satsang’ (spiritual discourse) held by Bhole Baba.
  2. The Tragedy:
    • As Bhole Baba left the venue, devotees ran after his vehicle.
    • Some people bent down to collect soil from the path where the baba had walked, a common practice for worship.
    • The race to collect soil led to overcrowding, resulting in people falling and getting trampled.
    • A total of 116 people lost their lives in the stampede, with 108 of them being women. Seven children were also among the victims.
  3. Organizational Lapses in Hathras Tragedy:
    • The event organizers had sought permission for 80,000 attendees, but the actual number far exceeded this.
    • Authorities have identified a lapse on the part of the organizers.
    • The sub-divisional magistrate’s role in granting permission is under investigation.
  4. Search for Bhole Baba:
    • The police are actively searching for Bhole Baba.
    • His whereabouts remain unknown, as he was not inside the campus of Ram Kutir Charitable Trust at Mainpuri.
  5. Government Response to Hathras Tragedy:
    • The Uttar Pradesh government has identified most of the bodies and kept them at the government hospital in Hathras.
    • An FIR has been registered, and action will be taken against those responsible.
    • Administrative lapses will be thoroughly investigated.
  6. Lessons and Reflection:
    • This tragedy highlights the need for better crowd management during large gatherings.
    • Stampedes at religious events have occurred before, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols.

The Hathras stampede serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of overcrowding and inadequate event planning. As investigations continue, we mourn the lives lost and hope for improved safety measures in the future.
