The case was brought forth by a 47-year-old domestic worker, who alleged that Revanna had raped her multiple times during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2021, first at the family’s farmhouse in Gannikada, Hassan, and later at their Basavanagudi residence in Bengaluru.
The survivor also revealed that Revanna filmed the assaults on his mobile phone and threatened her into silence, a pattern of abuse that reflected both power dynamics and premeditation.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID took charge of the case, ultimately filing a 2,000-page chargesheet that included:
- IPC 376(2)(k) & 376(2)(n): Rape by a person in authority & repeated rape
- 354A, 354B, 354C: Sexual harassment, assault, voyeurism
- 506 & 201: Criminal intimidation, destruction of evidence
- 66E of the IT Act: Privacy violations
Key forensic evidence—including the victim’s saree testing positive for sperm cells—bolstered the prosecution’s case. Over 120 exhibits and nearly 26 witnesses were examined.
⚖️ The Verdict and Its Fallout
Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat of the Special Court for Elected Representatives pronounced the verdict, finding Revanna guilty of all major charges. Witnesses in the courtroom reported the former MP broke down emotionally upon hearing the judgment.
The quantum of punishment is scheduled for announcement on August 2, with legal experts predicting a lengthy prison sentence under the applicable sections of the law.
This case is just the tip of the iceberg—Prajwal Revanna still faces three additional rape cases, all stemming from a wider investigation that began in April 2024, when more than 2,000 obscene videos allegedly involving him were leaked via pen drives and online platforms, causing national outrage.
✈️ Prajwal Revanna – Flight, Arrest, and the Political Domino Effect
In a now-infamous turn of events, Prajwal Revanna fled to Germany shortly after the videos went public, using a diplomatic passport. His escape prompted an Interpol alert and sparked debates on the misuse of political privilege.
Prajwal Revanna returned to India in May 2024 and was immediately arrested at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. His political party, Janata Dal (Secular), suspended his membership, distancing itself from the scandal.
The case even entangled his parents—HD Revanna and Bhavani Revanna—after they were accused of illegally detaining the victim to prevent her testimony, leading to a separate FIR for kidnapping.
🏛️ A Dynasty in Disgrace
The verdict is a monumental fall from grace for Prajwal Revanna, once hailed as the torchbearer of the Gowda political legacy. As the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and son of former Karnataka minister HD Revanna, his conviction has left a permanent stain on the family’s public image.
What was once considered Karnataka’s most powerful political lineage is now mired in legal battles and reputational damage. With three more criminal cases pending, the end of this political crisis is far from near.
