Walmart CTO Suresh Kumar Under Spotlight as Company Slashes 1,500 Tech Jobs
Bengaluru-born tech executive Suresh Kumar, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Walmart, is making headlines as the retail giant announces the layoff of 1,500 employees in its tech division. The move, which impacts staff at Walmart’s Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters and its global technology hubs, is part of the company’s drive to “accelerate decision-making and reduce complexity,” according to a memo co-authored by Kumar and Walmart US CEO John Furner.
💡 Who Is Suresh Kumar?
A seasoned leader with over three decades in the tech industry, Suresh Kumar has worked with some of the world’s most influential tech companies, including IBM, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. He joined Walmart in July 2019, tasked with overseeing its digital transformation and strengthening its tech infrastructure.
With a deep understanding of cloud computing, AI, retail systems, and data-driven decision-making, Kumar has been instrumental in driving Walmart’s modernisation strategy, bringing it in line with digital-first retail giants.
Indian Roots, Global Vision
Born and raised in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, Kumar’s academic journey began at IIT Madras, where he earned a BTech in Aerospace Engineering. He later pursued a PhD in Control Systems from Princeton University, setting the stage for a remarkable global career in tech leadership.
📉 Layoffs Amid Transformation

The announcement of 1,500 tech layoffs comes amid Walmart’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and cut through layers of bureaucracy. While the move is framed as a step toward greater efficiency, it has stirred concerns about workforce morale and corporate restructuring.
Kumar’s leadership, compensation, and decision-making are drawing attention. According to public filings, his total pay package reached $15.98 million last year, including a $1.1 million base salary and $12 million in stock awards—a contrast that hasn’t gone unnoticed during layoffs.
🔮 The Road Ahead
Despite the job cuts, Walmart shows no signs of slowing its investment in artificial intelligence, automation, and digital innovation. Suresh Kumar is at the forefront of these initiatives, leading efforts to create next-generation retail technology that could revolutionize how Walmart operates.
As Walmart navigates a changing retail landscape and economic headwinds, Kumar’s role will be crucial in shaping its future. His vision and expertise are expected to guide the company through this period of transformation, balancing efficiency with innovation.
