📰 Shashi Tharoor Breaks Ranks Again Over important Bill to Remove Ministers Facing Criminal Charges

New Delhi, August 20, 2025 — In a striking departure from the Congress party’s stance, senior parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor has once again distanced himself from the official line—this time over the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The bill seeks to enforce the resignation or removal of any minister—including the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers—if they are imprisoned for more than 30 consecutive days.

⚖️ The Bill: Reform or Overreach?

The proposal has sharply divided political opinion. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed it as “draconian,” warning that it could be weaponised to destabilise elected governments without due process.

“Tomorrow, you can file any case against a chief minister, have him/her arrested for 30 days without conviction… and he ceases to be a chief minister? It is absolutely anti-constitutional,” Priyanka declared.

In contrast, Tharoor offered a contrarian view, stating:

“If you spend 30 days in jail, can you continue to be a minister? This is a matter of common sense… I don’t see anything wrong in this.”

Shashi Tharoor further suggested that referring the bill to a parliamentary select committee would be beneficial for “deeper scrutiny and democratic debate.”

🔍 Shashi Tharoor’s Growing Rift with Congress

Shashi Tharoor’s remarks are the latest in a string of public divergences from Congress’s official positions.

  • Recently, he praised Prime Minister Modi’s dynamism,
  • Criticised the Congress leadership’s absence during a key parliamentary discussion on astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla,
  • And has been a visible member of the G-23 dissenting group since 2021.

Though Shashi Tharoor’s statements have fueled speculation of a possible crossover to the BJP, Tharoor dismissed such rumours:

“It is not a sign of my leaping to join the Prime Minister’s party… as some people have been implying.”

🏛️ Political Implications

If enacted, the bill could significantly reshape India’s political accountability framework.

  • Supporters say it strengthens ethical governance by setting stricter standards for ministers.
  • Critics warn it could enable political vendettas, allowing opponents to target leaders via prolonged legal detentions.

For Congress, Shashi Tharoor’s stance adds to internal strains, underscoring intra-party pluralism but also exposing fault lines ahead of a critical election cycle.

✍️ Author’s Perspective: The Real Crisis in Indian Politics

India today is witnessing the doldrums of politics, where many leaders—often lacking basic education, democratic understanding, or even general knowledge—wield enormous power. While ordinary citizens require minimum qualifications, skills, and accountability to secure even modest jobs, politics remains the one domain where the incapable, inefficient, illiterate, and corrupt often thrive.

This bill, in many ways, is an attempt to address that reality. It directly challenges the idea that politicians with criminal charges or jail time can still hold the nation’s highest offices. For many entrenched leaders, this poses an existential threat, and hence their loud objections are predictable.

When the Prime Minister himself has placed corruption under scrutiny, it is only logical that even the PM’s office be brought under the same law. The principle is clear: a minister, chief minister, or prime minister who spends 30 days in jail has no moral ground to remain in office.

Yet, opposition without constructive alternatives has become a pattern in Indian politics. For many politicians, such reform threatens their daanapani—their political sustenance—and so resistance is inevitable.

Ultimately, this is not merely about one bill, but about the never-ending political drama that prioritises power over accountability. The people of Bharat must continue to hope that someday, Indian politics will evolve into one where leaders behave responsibly, ethically, and in true service of the nation.
