Significance and Legend
The Sawan Somwar fast is believed to fulfil devotees’ wishes and bring blessings from God Shiva. According to legend, a young boy’s life was saved by his wife’s dedication to observing this fast.
The month of Shravan also commemorates the story of God Shiva drinking the deadly poison Halahal to save the world during the Samudra Manthan. His throat turned blue from the poison, earning him the name Neelkanth. Goddess Parvati is said to have stopped the poison from spreading further by entering his throat.
