With courtrooms burdened by a mounting backlog of cases, Dharwad is gearing up for the National Lok Adalat on September 13, where officials are urging litigants and advocates to participate actively and seize the opportunity to settle disputes amicably and swiftly.

Golden Opportunity for Amicable Settlement – National Lok Adalat

Chairperson of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and Principal District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bharati described the upcoming programme as a “golden opportunity” for citizens to end disputes without the long and costly process of a trial.

“As of July 1, nearly 28,358 cases were pending in Dharwad district courts. Of these, 725 were shortlisted for mediation. While 328 were taken up, only 66 could be resolved. The National Lok Adalat offers litigants another chance to resolve disputes peacefully, avoid unnecessary delays, and save litigation expenses,” Judge Bharati said while addressing the press.

Linked with 90-Day National Lok Adalat Mediation Drive

The Lok Adalat coincides with the 90-day nationwide mediation campaign (July 1–October 7), an initiative to promote conciliation and settlements outside regular trials. Officials noted that such programmes not only provide relief to litigants but also help in reducing the heavy caseload on the judiciary.

In addition, Judge Bharati reminded citizens of the Supreme Court’s recent directive that grants a 50% concession on fines for traffic violations. He encouraged residents with pending e-challans to clear them during the Lok Adalat to benefit from the scheme.

Support from the Bar and Judiciary

President of the Bar Association, Ashok Enigi, emphasised that Lok Adalat proceedings allow for resolutions through mutual consent and conciliation.

“Settling disputes here avoids the complexities of prolonged trials and ensures litigants walk away with faster, simpler, and mutually agreeable solutions,” he said.

Echoing this, Member Secretary of the DLSA and Senior Civil Judge Parashuram Doddamani highlighted the dual benefits of the initiative — reducing the judicial burden while simultaneously delivering speedy justice to the people.

Types of Cases Covered

The National Lok Adalat is especially effective in resolving:

  • Civil disputes
  • Cheque bounce cases
  • Matrimonial conflicts
  • Money recovery matters
  • Traffic violations

The system ensures that settlements are voluntary, binding, and enforceable in law, providing long-term relief to both parties involved.

A Call to Action

With tens of thousands of pending cases in Dharwad district alone, authorities are urging the public not to miss this chance.

Judge Bharati concluded with an appeal:

“This is a chance to resolve issues amicably and bring closure without prolonged battles. We urge both litigants and legal practitioners to take full advantage of this opportunity on September 13.”
