Macron Calls Snap Election in France After Far-Right Surge in EU Vote
Introduction
French President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved parliament and called for snap legislative elections on June 30 and July 7, just weeks after his centrist alliance suffered a stinging defeat in the European Parliament elections. The decision comes in response to the far-right National Rally (NR) party’s victory, which secured more than double the votes of Macron’s Renaissance alliance.
Mixed reactions for snap election in France
Macron’s move has been met with criticism from opponents who accuse him of arrogance and desperation. The left-leaning newspaper Liberation described the snap election call as an ‘extreme gamble,’ while the centre-right Le Figaro warned of an ‘unprecedented decision with incalculable consequences.
The European elections are seen as a reflection of national political sentiments, and the NR’s success has been attributed to discontent over issues such as immigration, crime and the cost of living Macron, a staunch Europhile, believes the snap elections will provide clarity and allow France to act in serenity and harmony.
What Analysts say about it
However, analysts suggest that Macron is taking a calculated risk, hoping that the European Parliament election results were a protest vote rather than a deeper dissatisfaction with his leadership. He may be gambling on giving Le Pen’s party a chance at partly governing the nation before the 2027 presidential election, hoping that it loses some of its lustre by then.
The snap elections will be a crucial test for both Macron and the far-right. If the NR wins a majority, it would be an unprecedented situation, with a mainstream president ‘cohabiting’ with a far-right-controlled parliament. This would effectively put the NR in charge of much of France domestic policymaking, while Macron would retain control over foreign, European, and defense policy.
Most analysts believe the most likely outcome is a parliament in which Le Pen’s party has significantly increased its MPs but has no absolute majority. This would lead to a splintered parliament and potential deadlock, forcing Macron to seek alliances with the mainstream center-right or center-left.
Conclusion
Regardless of the outcome, the snap elections in France will have far-reaching consequences for France’s political landscape. Macron’s gamble could slow the far-right’s momentum, but it also risks trapping him in a paralyzed parliament. As France prepares to host the Olympic Games in late July, the political upheaval is sure to be closely watched both at home and abroad.
