Diwali 2024: Solving the Date Conundrum
Introduction
In Bhartiya culture, Diwali, also called Deepawali, is an important festivity of Bharat. It is the biggest and most important Festival that Hindus worldwide celebrate. Dhanteras marks the start of the five-day celebration, which concludes with Bhaiya Dooj. Deewali is celebrated and rejoiced with the lighting of the lamps, diyas and rangolis and people pray to goddess Lakshmi for the triumph of light over darkness.
Diwali 2024 Date?
Due to conflicting dates this year, Diwali 2024 has generated a lot of queries regarding celebration dates. The Sanatan lunar calendar states that Diwali is customarily celebrated on Amavasya, the fifteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Kartik month. On the other hand, Kartik Amavasya falls on October 31 and November 1 of the same year in 2024. So the date confusions arise as to which date is appropriate for puja and celebration.
Hindu Scholars Offer Their Views- Diwali 2024
Prominent Scholars and astrologers have been studying scriptures and referring to the cosmic alignments in the historic city of Kashi (Varanasi). Their agreement? Both dates are accurate, however, let us clarify:
Amavasya, October 31st 2024:
- Diwali 2024 ideally be celebrated on Kartik Amavasya as per the Vedic Chart. The Amavasya tithi starts at 3:54 PM on October 31 and ends at 5:14 PM on November 1. Devotees perform Lakshmi Puja Archana around this time to secure blessings from the goddess of wealth. For the puja, the Pradosh Kaal (twilight hour) is seen to be particularly auspicious.
Amavasya, November 1st 2024:
- The Amavasya tithi falls on November 1st and lasts from 5:14 PM to 6:17 PM.
- For Diwali 2024 celebrations, the Nishita Kaal (midnight) is important. It is thought that at this time, Goddess Lakshmi makes her way to Earth and bestows wealth onto well-prepared homes.
Regional Differences
Diwali 2024 is not just one holiday; it takes on various forms throughout India and abroad. The dates of celebration are influenced by historical events, history, and regional customs:
- North India: October 31st is observed by the majority of North Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana. They light oil lamps, let off firecrackers, and exchange sweets as part of their celebrations.
- South India: Diwali is celebrated on November 1st in states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, where it corresponds with the lunar calendar. They place a strong emphasis on oil baths, visiting temples, and rangoli (decorative patterns).
- West India: Maharashtra and Gujarat frequently celebrate Diwali on two days, with the main festivities taking place on October 31 and the New Year (Nutan Varsh) on November 1.
Advice for Those Observing
Here’s the lesson for people preparing to celebrate Diwali 2024:

Recall that the true meaning of Diwali is the happiness it offers, not the date.
