Bombay High Court Denies Bail to Suspected PFI Members for Conspiracy

Mumbai, June 12, 2024: In a significant judicial development, the Bombay High Court has denied the bail applications of three individuals linked to the Popular Front of India (PFI). The courts ruling underscores serious allegations against the accused, suggesting their involvement in a conspiracy to convert India into an Islamic state by the year 2047. This decision comes amidst heightened scrutiny of the PFI’s activities and its purported agenda, drawing attention to the broader implications for national security and social harmony in the country.

The Bombay High Court denied bail to three men arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in 2022. The accused were allegedly linked to the banned terror outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) and were charged with “conspiring to overthrow the government by using criminal force.”

Key Points of Accused PFI Members:

  • Accusations: The accused—Razi Ahmed Khan, Unais Umar Khaiyyam Patel, and Kayyum Abdul Shaikh—were charged with conspiring to transform India into an Islamic nation by 2047.
  • Prima Facie Evidence: The court noted that there was overwhelming evidence against the accused. They were not only propagators but actively intended to implement the Vision 2047 document of their organization (PFI).
  • Motivating Like-Minded Individuals: The accused allegedly motivated like-minded people to join them in fulfilling their agenda.
  • Detrimental Activities: The court observed that the appellants, along with other accused persons, systematically undertook activities detrimental to the interest and integrity of the nation.
  • Division Bench: The ruling was delivered by a division bench of Justices Ajey Gadkari and Shyam Chandak.

Context:

The PFI, a group banned by the Indian government, has faced scrutiny for its alleged involvement in extremist activities. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of the charges against the accused and the need to prevent actions that could threaten national security.

This ruling reflects the court’s stance on bail applications related to terrorism and organizations with ill intentions.
