New Delhi: The national capital came to a standstill on Wednesday evening as heavy rainfall pounded the city, inundating streets, disrupting traffic, and leaving commuters stranded. Here’s a comprehensive look at the situation:
Weather Conditions
The torrential downpour, accompanied by thunderstorms, brought Delhi to its knees. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a “red” weather warning, signalling extreme weather conditions. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, recorded 79.2 mm of rainfall between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm. Other areas were equally affected: Mayur Vihar received 119 mm, Delhi University 77.5 mm, Pusa 66.5 mm, and the Palam observatory 43.7 mm.
Delhi Rain – Impact on Daily Life
Waterlogged roads turned into rivers, causing chaos for commuters. Lutyens’ Delhi and routes leading to Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad witnessed severe traffic snarls. Old Rajinder Nagar, where students had been protesting the tragic death of three UPSC aspirants due to flooding in a coaching institute basement, was submerged in knee-deep water. Connaught Place, a bustling commercial hub, saw water gushing into showrooms and restaurants.
Delhi Rain – School Closures
Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced late at night that all schools—both government and private—would remain closed on Thursday. Her statement emphasized the need to prioritize safety due to the heavy rainfall and the forecast of more rain. Students and parents were advised to stay home.
Delhi Rain – Government Response
The Delhi government swung into action. Emergency control rooms were set up to monitor waterlogging around the clock. Quick response teams addressed issues on the ground, and the Public Works Department (PWD) inspected water pumps to ensure effective drainage. A joint effort by civic agencies and police aimed to mitigate the impact of waterlogging. Additionally, a WhatsApp chatbot and helpline were launched for citizens to report waterlogging complaints.
Delhi Rain – Public Reaction
Frustration and inconvenience were palpable. Social media buzzed with complaints about flooded streets, stalled vehicles, and disrupted travel plans. Residents shared their experiences, highlighting the urgency of addressing drainage and infrastructure challenges. The situation underscored the need for better urban planning and preparedness for extreme weather events.
Future Weather Forecast
As of today, the IMD predicts continued Delhi rain. Tomorrow’s forecast includes hazy sunshine with temperatures ranging from 87°F to 106°F. A light rain is expected on the following day. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
Stay safe, Delhi! And remember, your umbrella might need an upgrade.
