But on April 28, 2025, trust gave way to betrayal: Kumar vanished with a bag containing ₹1.51 crore, meant for a high-stakes business transaction.

After absconding, the Bengaluru driver is believed to have donated nearly ₹1 lakh of the stolen cash into the hundi of a prominent temple in Bengaluru. In the South Indian tradition, once money is placed in the hundi, it is regarded as an irrevocable gift to the deity, beyond the reach of human claims, regardless of how it was acquired.
“This is unlike anything we’ve encountered,” said a senior police officer on the case. “We’ve seen thieves stash money in all kinds of places, but donating it to a temple and making it unrecoverable? That’s a new one.”
While the exact amount donated remains uncertain, officials say it was substantial enough to complicate the case. The rest of the money is still being traced, with investigators combing through CCTV footage, bank records, and tip-offs to locate the missing funds.
