Allahabad High Court Warns: Majority Could Become Minority If Unchecked Conversions Continue
Introduction
In a significant ruling, the Allahabad High Court has sounded the alarm on the rapid pace of religious conversions taking place across Uttar Pradesh, cautioning that if the current trend continues unabated, India’s majority population could find itself in the minority in the not-so-distant future.
The stern observation came as the court rejected the bail application of one Kailash, who was charged under the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act 2021 for his alleged involvement in converting several people from his village to Christianity.
Majority at Risk of Becoming Minority– Allahabad High Court
“If this process is allowed to be carried out, the majority population of this country would be in the minority one day. Such religious congregations— where conversions are taking place—should be immediately stopped,” the court warned in its ruling delivered on Monday.
Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal of Allahabad High Court , who presided over the case, noted that Article 25 of the Constitution, which provides for freedom of conscience and free profession, practice, and propagation of religion, does not extend to converting people from one faith to another.
“The word ‘propagation’ means to promote, but it does not mean to convert any person from their religion to another,” the court clarified.
Rampant Conversions of Vulnerable Groups
The Allahabad High Court also took note of the alarming trend of unlawful conversions targeting people from the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other economically disadvantaged groups.
“It has come into notice of this Allahabad High Court in several cases that unlawful activity of conversion of people of SC/ST castes and other castes including economically poor persons to Christianity is being done at rampant pace throughout the state of Uttar Pradesh,” the court observed.
Allegations Against the Accused
According to the prosecution, the accused Kailash had allegedly taken a man named Ramphal to Delhi to attend a social gathering, promising that he would be treated for his mental illness and return to his village within a week.
However, Ramphal never returned, and when his sister, the informant, inquired about his whereabouts, she did not receive a satisfactory response from Kailash.
The FIR further alleged that several other people from the village were also taken to similar gatherings in Delhi, where they were converted to Christianity.
Statements of Alleged Victims
The Allahabad High Court noted that the statements recorded by the investigating officer of various other people revealed, at this stage, that the accused Kailash had been taking people to attend religious congregations held in New Delhi, where they were being converted to Christianity.
Citing these statements, the Allahabad High Court rejected the bail application, stating that the allegations against the accused are serious and that he is not entitled to bail at this stage.
Urgent Need for Government Action
The Allahabad High Court’s ruling has once again highlighted the pressing need for the government to address the issue of unlawful religious conversions and take necessary steps to curb the practice.
With the majority population at risk of becoming a minority if the current trend continues, the government must act swiftly to enforce the law and ensure that the constitutional rights of all citizens are protected.
