A devastating cloudburst hit Dharali village in Uttarkashi district on Tuesday afternoon, turning a peaceful Himalayan hamlet into a disaster zone within minutes. Triggered by intense rainfall over the Kheer Ganga river catchment, the resulting flash floods surged through narrow valleys, sweeping away homes, vehicles, bridges, and hopes.

Eyewitnesses shared gut-wrenching visuals of the calamity as muddy torrents ripped through the scenic village. Cries for help echoed through social media clips showing terrified residents fleeing collapsing homes. The river turned into a raging monster, swallowing hotels, shops, and the once-thriving Dharali market, a stopover for Gangotri pilgrims.

“Baap re baap… sab kuch le gaya paani!” gasped a villager in a now-viral video, capturing the moment floods engulfed an entire street.

⚰️ Casualties and Rescue in Uttarkashi

At least four fatalities have been confirmed, with 8 people missing, most of them construction workers and local residents. Several homestays and hotels were wiped out, with visitors caught in the chaos. Locals say the damage is “unprecedented” in recent memory.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief and assured action:

“The heavy damage caused by the cloudburst in Dharali is deeply distressing. Relief and rescue are being carried out with urgency. We stand with the victims.”

The NDRF, SDRF, and ITBP’s 2 elite 16-member teams are conducting ongoing search and rescue missions. Drone surveillance and thermal sensors are being used to detect possible survivors. Authorities have issued red alerts in surrounding regions, including Gangotri, Harsil, and Tehri.
