Trinamool Congress Cracks Down on Internal Disputes, Urges Unity as 2026 Assembly Polls Loom

June 14, 2025 — Kolkata, India — Ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has taken decisive steps to address internal party tensions, issuing a stern warning to key members Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh. A closed-door meeting, held at TMC’s Bhabanipur office, saw top party leaders cautioning the two influential figures to end their ongoing infighting. TMC state president Subrata Bakshi, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, and state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas attended the meeting.

Party Leadership Cracks Down on Internal Conflict

To maintain party discipline, TMC’s senior leadership has made it clear that public disputes between Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh are unacceptable and could harm the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections. Sources within the party indicate that both leaders were explicitly instructed to cease making statements against each other, with a warning of strict disciplinary action if the infighting persists.

Anubrata Mondal, a prominent TMC leader from Birbhum, was especially urged to maintain composure and avoid provocative actions. This comes after the recent controversy surrounding Anubrata Mondal, who was accused of making an abusive phone call to a police inspector. Following the incident, the Birbhum district police filed an FIR against Anubrata Mondal, further complicating his standing within the party. However, as usual, no action was taken against him.

TMC leaders expressed concern that such controversies could create a distraction and undermine the party’s chances of securing a favourable outcome in the upcoming state elections. A senior party leader, speaking anonymously, remarked:

“Whenever Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh speak publicly, controversy follows. The party likely told them to stay silent at least until the Assembly elections to avoid further issues.”

Silence from Key Figures

Despite the gravity of the situation, both Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh remained tight-lipped following the closed-door meeting. Neither of them issued any public statements, and senior party figures such as Subrata Bakshi and Firhad Hakim also refrained from commenting to the media. This silence appears to be part of the TMC’s strategy to quell internal tensions and avoid giving the opposition fodder for criticism ahead of the 2026 elections.

TMC’s Broader Strategy for 2026

The closed-door meeting also focused on strategising for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, with the party looking to strengthen its base and mobilise support. One of the key events for TMC in the coming months is the July 21 Martyrs’ Day observance, a major annual event that the party uses to rally its supporters.

TMC’s state leadership has instructed district presidents and chairpersons to initiate mass outreach campaigns across blocks, panchayats, and municipalities, aiming to ensure a record-breaking turnout at the Martyrs’ Day event. Bakshi also emphasised the need to galvanise support by highlighting the alleged discriminatory policies of the BJP-led central government, accusing them of undermining Bengal’s interests.

Furthermore, Bakshi stressed the importance of pushing back against the BJP’s communal agenda, framing the upcoming elections as a battle between TMC’s inclusive vision for the state and the BJP’s divisive politics.

TMC’s Path Forward

The TMC leadership is keenly aware that internal divisions and public squabbles could derail the party’s momentum, especially in the politically charged environment leading up to the 2026 Assembly elections. The party’s efforts to quell the infighting between Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh signal a broader strategy to unify the party and maintain focus on the electoral battle ahead.

This internal shake-up within the TMC underscores the party’s determination to present a united front as it approaches one of the most crucial elections in West Bengal’s political history. As the 2026 Assembly elections draw closer, all eyes will be on the TMC’s ability to reconcile internal differences and deliver on its promises to the people of Bengal.
