PM Modi Visits Wayanad: Aerial Survey Reveals Extent of Landslide Devastation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to visit Wayanad, Kerala, on August 10, 2024, to assess the aftermath of devastating landslides that occurred on July 30, which resulted in significant loss of life and property. The PM Modi’s visit included an aerial survey of the affected areas, where he aimed to evaluate the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Aerial Survey and Ground Assessment
Upon arriving in Kannur around 11 AM, PM Modi will conduct an aerial survey of the landslide-hit regions, specifically focusing on Chooralmala and Mundakkai, which were severely impacted. Following the aerial assessment, he visited on-the-ground locations, where he will receive briefings from rescue teams about the current evacuation operations. The Prime Minister’s presence is seen as crucial for understanding the scale of the disaster and the immediate needs of the affected communities.
Impact of the Landslides
The landslides have claimed over 400 lives, with many individuals still unaccounted for. As of now, 150 people remain missing, and ongoing search and rescue operations have been temporarily paused during the Prime Minister’s visit. The Kerala government has reported that 197 body parts have been recovered, and 78 individuals are currently hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the disaster. The situation remains dire, with extensive damage to residential areas, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
During his visit, PM Modi is to interact with survivors and those currently residing in relief camps. He expresses his commitment to ensuring that the affected communities receive adequate support. Following his interactions, he is going to chair a review meeting with officials to discuss ongoing relief efforts and future rehabilitation strategies. The Kerala government has requested ₹2,000 crore in aid to assist with recovery and rebuilding efforts, highlighting the extensive losses incurred by the disaster.
Statements and Future Actions
Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented Wayanad, welcomed PM Modi’s visit and expressed hope that the Prime Minister would declare the landslides a national disaster after witnessing the devastation firsthand. Gandhi emphasized the need for comprehensive aid and support for the region, reinforcing the call for the central government to take decisive action in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Ongoing Recovery Operations
As recovery operations continue, the Kerala government has initiated plans to rehabilitate those displaced by the landslides into 125 identified houses, including government quarters. Cleaning efforts in the disaster-stricken areas are expected to take around 90 days, with 23 relief camps currently operational, housing over 2,200 individuals. The government is focused on providing immediate assistance while planning for long-term recovery strategies.
PM Modi’s visit to Wayanad underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of the affected communities and facilitating a coordinated response to this tragic event.
