PM Modi Inaugurates SEMICON India 2025: A Landmark Step in India’s Semiconductor Journey
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated SEMICON India 2025 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, launching the nation’s largest and most ambitious semiconductor event to date. With over 350 companies from 33 countries and more than 15,000 attendees expected, the fourth edition of SEMICON marks a defining moment in India’s emergence as a global chip powerhouse.
🌍 A Global Gathering for Chips
Jointly organised by the India Semiconductor Mission and SEMI, the global semiconductor industry body, SEMICON India 2025 has become South Asia’s biggest chip industry showcase.
The event brings together industry titans, academic experts, policymakers, and startups to explore breakthroughs across the semiconductor value chain — from chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, and smart manufacturing to AI-driven innovation and sustainability.
Recent milestones underscore India’s momentum, including the successful launch of an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) pilot line in Sanand, Gujarat, delivering the first-ever “Made in India” chips. This is supported by the government’s ambitious ₹76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has already backed 10 major projects and 23 design-focused startups.
💡 Beyond Fabs: R&D and Design Take Centre Stage
SEMICON India 2025 emphasises that the future of chips is not just about massive fabs, but also design and innovation. Under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, 23 startups are developing chips for defence, aerospace, EVs, and clean energy.
Today, 280+ academic institutions and 72 startups are using state-of-the-art chip design tools through government-supported programs — signalling India’s transformation from a consumer of chips to a creator of cutting-edge solutions for the global market.
👩💻 Building a Talent Pipeline for 2030
India’s semiconductor journey also depends on people. By 2030, the industry will require one million additional skilled professionals. Programs like “Chip In!” sessions, SEMI University, and the India Semiconductor Workforce Development Program are nurturing the next generation of engineers and innovators, offering hands-on exposure to chip design and advanced manufacturing.
📈 Why SEMICON 2025 Matters
India’s semiconductor market is projected to double to $108 billion by 2030, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally. From its early editions in Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, and Greater Noida, SEMICON has now matured into a “coming-of-age” showcase of India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Prime Minister Modi, in his inaugural address, captured the optimism:
A defining chapter in India's semiconductor journey is unfolding, with innovation and investment driving a new wave of growth. Addressing Semicon India 2025 in Delhi. https://t.co/5jurEGuYnI
