In a historic stride toward green mobility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off Maruti Suzuki’s first all-electric SUV, the eVitara, from the company’s Hansalpur facility. The event marked not just the launch of a vehicle but the dawn of India’s ambitious bid to become a global hub for electric mobility.

PM Modi’s Big Announcement

Flanked by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and senior executives from Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan, the Prime Minister declared that Made-in-India EVs will soon ply the roads of over 100 countries.

“Now, the EVs that will run in dozens of countries around the world will have written on them—Made In India,” PM Modi said, underscoring the pride of Indian innovation.

The eVitara: A Global EV SUV

The eVitara is engineered for international markets with a 3-in-1 electric powertrain (motor, inverter, transmission) and comes in two battery options:

  • 🔋 49 kWh pack – 144 hp
  • 🔋 61 kWh pack – 174 hp

Both variants deliver 189 Nm torque, ensuring a powerful, smooth ride across terrains.

Critical Minerals Mission & Energy Security

PM Modi also spotlighted India’s Critical Minerals Mission, which will explore 1,200+ sites across the country for rare earth elements vital for EV battery production. He announced domestic hybrid battery electrolyte manufacturing, a move to secure India’s energy independence and reduce reliance on imports.

Investment Push: ₹70,000 Crore Commitment

Suzuki’s pledge to invest ₹70,000 crore in the next 5–6 years highlights the scale of ambition. The funds will expand EV production, battery innovation, and global export infrastructure.

Poetic Nod to Hansalpur

Reflecting on the Hansalpur plant’s journey since 2012, Modi likened its 13-year milestone to adolescence:

“Teenage is the period of spreading wings… Gujarat’s Maruti is entering its teens, and it will move ahead with new zeal and enthusiasm.”

India’s EV Export Revolution

With India’s auto exports already doubling in the last decade—from ₹50,000 crore to ₹1.2 lakh crore annually—the eVitara marks the beginning of a new export era. It positions India not only as a domestic leader in clean technology but as a global player in EV exports, strengthening the government’s Make in India, Make for the World vision.
