India Targets 180,000 bpd at Numaligarh Refinery by 2027 with $3 Billion Expansion Plan
In a significant move to bolster its energy infrastructure, Oil India has unveiled plans to expand the capacity of the Numaligarh refinery in Assam to 180,000 barrels per day (bpd) by March 2027. This ambitious project is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation’s energy security and reduce reliance on imports.
Numaligarh Refinery expansion
The expansion will see the refinery’s capacity triple from its current 60,000 bpd. A key component of this initiative is the construction of a new crude oil pipeline connecting the refinery to Paradip Port in Odisha. This pipeline, expected to be operational by December 2025, will facilitate the efficient transport of refined products, thereby streamlining logistics and reducing transportation costs.
Oil India has earmarked an estimated $3 billion for this project, with investments spread across various phases until 2030. This substantial financial commitment underscores the company’s dedication to strengthening India’s domestic energy capabilities.
The strategic importance of the Numaligarh expansion
Ranjit Rath, Chairman of Oil India, highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion during a recent press conference. “The Numaligarh refinery upgrade is crucial for meeting the growing energy demands of our nation. By increasing our refining capacity and improving our infrastructure, we aim to ensure a stable and reliable supply of energy,” Rath stated.
In addition to the refinery expansion, Oil India is also investing in clean energy projects, including a 50,000 tons per year biorefinery in Assam that will produce ethanol from bamboo. This initiative aligns with the government’s push towards sustainable and renewable energy sources.
Numaligarh and India’s Energy
The Numaligarh refinery upgrade is expected to play a pivotal role in India’s energy landscape, providing a significant boost to the local economy and creating numerous job opportunities. As the project progresses, it will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and policymakers alike.
This development marks a major step forward in India’s journey towards energy self-sufficiency and sustainability, reflecting the nation’s commitment to building a robust and resilient energy infrastructure for the future.
