What began as a celebration of academic success turned into a digital nightmare for Abhishek Gill, an IIT Bombay student, who discovered that his college ID photo was misused in a disturbing scam targeting JEE aspirants, especially young girls.

🚨 From Pride to Panic: How It All Unfolded

IIT Bombay student Abhishek had posted an image of his IIT Bombay ID card on social media eight months ago to commemorate his admission into the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) program. That post, like many inspirational stories, gained traction across platforms and even appeared in Google Image search results.

However, a scammer downloaded the ID image, created a fake identity as “Abhishek Kumar from IIT Bombay CSE”, and offered to leak JEE exam papers in exchange for explicit photos from aspirants.

“Someone took that image from Google, impersonated me, and used it to scam and harass JEE aspirant girls,” Gill revealed in a viral LinkedIn post.

One vigilant student cross-verified the scammer’s identity and found Gill’s real profile. While she blocked the fake account, messages from similar profiles persisted.

🧠 Digital Vigilance and Online Backlash

IIT Bombay student Gill immediately took down his old post and urged others to think twice before sharing personal IDs or documents online.

“The internet doesn’t forget, but the wrong people always find ways to misuse it,” he cautioned.

The revelation sparked a storm of reactions:

  • Calls for police involvement and cybercrime reporting
  • Demands for better content moderation on platforms
  • Suggestions to blur or watermark sensitive content

🔐 The Bigger Picture: Online Identity Theft in the Education Sector

This incident is a stark reminder of how identity theft and online scams have become more common among students and professionals alike.

As competitive exams like the JEE become more high-stakes, scammers are finding new ways to exploit hopeful aspirants. IIT Bombay student Gill’s ordeal is now a case study in digital responsibility, urging both institutions and individuals to be more vigilant.
