Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls Pakistan’s China-Brahmaputra Blockade Theory ‘Baseless and Fear-Inducing’
In a sharp rebuttal to Pakistan’s latest attempt at geopolitical provocation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has dismissed allegations that China could choke the Brahmaputra River’s flow to India as a “myth designed to incite panic”.
🌊 Pakistan’s Hypothetical Threat Sparks Debate
The controversy stems from remarks made by Rana Ihsaan Afzal, a senior aide to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who suggested that China could retaliate against India by blocking the Brahmaputra—mirroring India’s assertive stand on the Indus Waters Treaty.
The theory quickly gained traction across social media platforms, triggering concern and debate over India’s water security.
📉 Sarma Counters with Hydrological Facts
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Himanta Biswa Sarma debunked the narrative with detailed scientific insight, writing:
What If China Stops Brahmaputra Water to India?

A Response to Pakistan’s New Scare Narrative
After India decisively moved away from the outdated Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan is now spinning another manufactured threat:
“What if China stops the Brahmaputra’s water to India?”…
“Let’s dismantle this myth—not with fear, but with facts and national clarity.”
Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that only 30-35% of the Brahmaputra’s water originates in China (where it’s known as Yarlung Tsangpo), primarily through glacial melt. The remaining 65–70% of its volume is generated within India due to monsoonal rains and tributaries from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
🧪 Hydrological Data Validates India’s Control
Sarma presented hydrological data to support his stance:
- At the Tuting entry point (Indo-China border), the Brahmaputra’s flow is 2,000–3,000 m³/s
- During the Indian monsoon, that figure swells to 15,000–20,000 m³/s downstream in Assam
This data proves that India’s geography and climate are the primary contributors to the Brahmaputra’s strength.
🔍 Sarma Calls Out Fear-Mongering
The CM further pointed out that China has never officially threatened to weaponise the Brahmaputra River, and Pakistan’s speculative remarks are attempts to stoke fear and draw false equivalence with the Indus dispute.
“Brahmaputra is not controlled by a single source. It is powered by our geography, our monsoon, and our civilizational resilience,” Sarma wrote.
He also suggested that Pakistan’s panic stems from India’s firm stand on its water rights, warning that using rivers as tools of fear is “irresponsible and outdated diplomacy.”
🔄 India’s Strategic Hydrological Position
With this clear-cut rebuttal, India has not only neutralised a disinformation narrative but also highlighted its self-reliance in hydrological resources. Experts say the episode has reaffirmed India’s control over its major rivers and exposed Pakistan’s geopolitical tactics.
