Travel Vlogger Turned Spy? Jyoti Malhotra’s Arrest Sparks Espionage Controversy
In a startling development that blends social media fame with national security concerns, travel vlogger Jyoti Malhotra — popularly known as Jyoti Rani — has been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive Indian military information to Pakistani intelligence operatives. The 33-year-old influencer, who runs the YouTube channel Travel With Jo, is one of six individuals charged under the Official Secrets Act 1923 and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Section 152, which deals with acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India. This section criminalises acts that incite secession, armed rebellion, or subversive activities, or encourage feelings of separatism. It also criminalises actions that endanger India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity. ).
Who Is Jyoti Malhotra?

Hailing from Haryana, Jyoti Malhotra built a significant digital footprint as a travel influencer. With over 3.77 lakh YouTube subscribers and 1.37 lakh Instagram followers, she earned a loyal audience for her solo travel adventures, motorbike journeys, and cultural documentaries. Her content spans countries like India, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, and Pakistan, with an emphasis on personal experiences and local customs.
It was her travels to Pakistan, however, that first drew the attention of Indian intelligence. On her visits, she documented popular sites such as Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar, Katas Raj Temple, and Pakistani intercity bus rides. Her social media post titled “Ishq Lahore” showcased her deep admiration for Pakistani culture — a sentiment that has now taken on a more sinister interpretation.
The Espionage Allegations

According to Indian investigators, Jyoti Malhotra’s first visit to Pakistan occurred in 2023, facilitated by visa agents. During this trip, she allegedly met Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. Over time, she is said to have developed a rapport with Danish, who is accused of introducing her to Pakistani intelligence officials.
Authorities claim Malhotra maintained ongoing contact with these operatives through encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat, using fake identities to mask her communications. Investigators believe she passed on sensitive details about Indian Army movements and locations, feeding into an espionage ring active in Haryana and Punjab.
Romantic Links and Suspicious Travels
The investigation reveals a personal dimension to the alleged espionage. Jyoti Malhotra is believed to have formed a romantic relationship with a Pakistani intelligence operative, accompanying him on a trip to Bali, Indonesia. Her travels in 2024 to Kashmir, including video content from Dal Lake and the Srinagar-Banihal railway, have also raised suspicions about her motives during those excursions.
A Crackdown Following National Tragedy
Malhotra’s arrest closely follows Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. In the wake of this crackdown, Ehsan-ur-Rahim was declared persona non grata and expelled from India on May 13 for espionage activities — a move seen as part of broader efforts to dismantle intelligence operations linked to Pakistan.

Legal Action and Ongoing Probe
Currently, Jyoti Malhotra is under a five-day police remand. Authorities have reportedly seized incriminating materials from her mobile devices and laptop. Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor attributed the breakthrough to intensified digital surveillance and intelligence-sharing between agencies.
The case has sparked urgent discussions around national security vulnerabilities in the digital age, particularly involving high-profile social media influencers. With investigations ongoing, more arrests are anticipated as officials continue to unearth the full extent of this cross-border espionage network.
A Cautionary Tale for the Digital Era
As the lines blur between global connectivity and national security, Jyoti Malhotra’s arrest serves as a chilling reminder of how social media can become a conduit for covert operations. The unfolding saga has not only rattled the influencer community but also highlighted the evolving tactics used by foreign intelligence agencies to infiltrate Indian institutions and gather classified information.
The nation watches closely as the investigation deepens, demanding answers — and accountability.
