Kolkata Paralyzed by Heaviest Rain in Years — Morning Brings Chaos, Schools Shut, City Choked

Kolkata woke up to its streets, drowning this morning after one of the heaviest downpours in recent memory. Torrential rain that began overnight left large parts of the city underwater, gummed up traffic, cripple public transport, forced school closures, and sparked safety risks. With the skies finally easing off, all eyes are now on the municipal corporation to clear the mess and get life moving again.

What happened

  • Record rain totals: Certain southern and eastern parts of Kolkata saw extraordinary rainfall in just a few hours — Garia Kamdahari recorded 332 mm, Jodhpur Park around 285 mm, Kalighat around 280 mm, Topsia 275 mm, Ballygunge 264 mm. Even northern areas like Thanthania got battered (~195 mm).
  • Massive waterlogging everywhere: Roads became rivers. Major thoroughfares, back streets, and neighbourhoods in both south and north Kolkata, including central zones, were submerged. Knee-deep water was reported in many areas; water entered houses and complexes.
  • Transport grinding to a halt: Metro services were suspended between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan because the tracks were flooded. Some suburban and circular railway lines were suspended or truncated. Trains to/from Howrah and Sealdah were delayed/cancelled.
  • Schools, offices and exams disrupted: Many schools declared holidays or postponed exams. Parents awakened early to cancellation notices. The Durga Puja preparations — already underway — suffered serious delays.
  • Safety hazards, electrocution, and power outages: At least one person died due to electrocution. Live wires and water-logged electric installations added risk. Some localities were without electricity.

The current situation

The rain has tapered off, but the cleanup is just beginning. Traffic is partially moving, but many roads are still impassable. Public transport is slowly being restored as pumps are deployed and drainage crews work. Many residents remain stranded or are dealing with flooded homes. Schools and offices are issuing updates as decisions are taken zone-by-zone.

What’s next — municipal response & hope

  • The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has activated disaster-management and drainage teams. Pumps are being deployed across the worst-affected zones.
  • Authorities are promising that once the rain stops fully, roads will start drying out as drainage systems are cleared. However, residents remain cautious: past incidents suggest that massive rain often overwhelms even the best efforts.
  • IMD weather forecasts warn of more rain in parts of south Bengal & adjoining districts for the next day or two, because of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Residents are advised to stay alert.

Voices from the ground

“This is beyond anything I’ve seen — even more flooding than during Amphan in some areas,” says a resident in Garia.
Another reports that ground-floors of houses are already submerged, people wading in water to get out.

Why did this hit so hard

  • Extremely high rainfall intensity over a short period overloaded drainage systems.
  • Low-lying parts of the city are especially vulnerable.
  • Infrastructure (road drains, pumping stations) is already under stress during the monsoon; accumulation of debris and inadequate maintenance worsen clogging.
  • Traffic and metro systems don’t have much buffer when water invades tracks or roads.

Outlook

If the rain holds off, the city might begin to recover over the next few hours: roads clearing, metro and train services resuming, and schools opening in unaffected areas. But with more showers forecast, the risk of renewed flooding remains. The ability of municipal authorities to respond fast — pumping, clearing drains, ensuring roads are safe — will determine how quickly normal life returns.
